Results Showcase Sun Fire V890 Server, Solaris 10 OS Performance and Price/Performance Leadership on Sybase Database IQ
SANTA CLARA, Calif. -- September 1, 2005 - Sun Microsystems, Inc. (Nasdaq: SUNW) today announced Sun´s Enterprise class UltraSPARC(R) IV-based Sun Fire V890 system running the Solaris 10 Operating System (OS) and Sybase IQ has set a new benchmark world record. Sun demonstrates continued SPARC processor excellence and industry-leading performance and price/performance on the Sun Fire V890 server by offering the following advantages:
- Best multi-user performance for any system at the 100GB Scale Factor 24139 TPC-H throughput@100GB -- more than twice the previous best from IBM, 11531 TPC-H throughput@100GB obtained with 16x Opt 2.0GHz processors (August 31, 2005)
- The dual node Sun Fire V890 with a $/QphH of $46, the Best price- performance of any 16-processor configuration at 100GB SF, 35% better than the IBM e325 Cluster at $71. (August 31, 2005)
- The Sun Fire V890 dual node configuration has the lowest total cost of ownership ($485,449) of any 16 processor submission at 100GB, more than 40% cheaper than the IBM e325 Cluster at $863,410 (August 31, 2005)
Actual Test Results Conducted by TPC:
- The dual node Sun Fire V890 system delivered 10487 QphH@100GB at a price performance of $46/QphH@100GB, and with availability date of 8/5/2005.
- The IBM EServer 3215 cluster delivered 12,216 QphH@100GB at a price performance of $71/QphH@100GB, and with a scheduled availability of 11/08/03.

About TPC-H
Established by the Transaction Processing Performance Council (TPC), the TPC-H benchmark is an industry-standard Decision Support test designed to measure systems´ capability to examine large volumes of data, execute queries with a high degree of complexity, and give answers to critical business questions. The TPC-H benchmark evaluates a composite performance metric (QphH@size) and a price/performance metric $/QphH@size) that measure the performance of various decision support systems by the execution of sets of queries against a standard database under controlled conditions. TPC-H, QphH and $/QphH are trademarks of the TPC. For additional information on the TPC-H benchmark, please visit the Transaction Processing Performance Council´s Web site at http://www.tpc.org/.
