BARCELONA, SPAIN, 3GSM World Congress, Booth C43 & HS8.07/HS8.08. ? February 1, 2006 ? As an established leader in the telecommunications industry, Sun Microsystems Inc. (Nasdaq: SUNW) will reinforce its position as the technology backbone driving consumer adoption of mobile technologies at 3GSM World Congress 2006. As convergence becomes a reality and wireless service providers reap the benefits of new revenue streams from an enhanced consumer experience, Sun´s presence at the show will offer insight into the forces driving the industry: open standards, Java(tm)-enabled applications, and IP-based services.
˝This year´s 3GSM World Congress is a pivotal event for everyone in the wireless industry,˝ said Glenn Edens, Senior Vice President of Communications, Media and Entertainment and Director of Sun Labs at Sun Microsystems. ˝Vast improvements in so many technologies have made the much-hyped concept of convergence a global reality at last. But there are still myriad questions and challenges to be addressed. Sun is at 3GSM to help telecommunications firms solidify their thinking about the technologies that will drive their growth, and to facilitate a dialogue that will propel forward the industry as a whole.˝
The convergence of telecom and data networks has created new business opportunities for communications service providers. In this era of convergence, the success of service providers will hinge on the constant introduction of new and innovative IP-based services to attract new customers and promote loyalty among existing ones. With this opportunity, today´s service providers also face a dilemma: the cost of changing the business to accommodate a new service often outweighs the perceived revenue opportunities. With a history of delivering carrier-grade hardware, software and services to the telecommunications industry, Sun is well-positioned to serve as a partner in helping telecommunication firms make sound technology decisions to benefit their businesses.
Showcasing Superior-Grade Technology to Support IMS
Sun is leading the next-generation telecom IT infrastructure, enabling carriers to benefit from the new converged IP-based networks. At 3GSM, Sun and partners will provide live demonstrations of revenue-generating applications on IP Multimedia Subsystem (IMS) technology at the Israel Mobile Association (IMA) pavilion in *Hall 1 Booth D10*. The new standard for a converged network, IMS offers telecom operators and service providers a path to new IP-based services - embracing rich, multimedia sessions and the ability to seamlessly incorporate value-added third-party providers, while leveraging their existing circuit-based network.
Enhancing the Future of Mobile Online Gaming
Online gaming is one of the hottest growth areas in the mobile world and Java technologies will be at the core of these multiplayer experiences. Chris Melissinos, Sun Microsystems´ Chief Gaming Officer, will be speaking at 11:20am on Wednesday, February 15^th , at Hall 2 level 1, about the future of connected mobile games, looking at how the mobile device will reach across the network to interact with thousands of other devices in these virtual worlds. A high-profile spokesman for the industry and an active member of the Game Developers Conference ? Mobile Advisory Board and the Transmedial Access Consortium, Chris is widely regarded as an industry expert on mobile gaming.
Open Standards Helps Drive Down Cost and Increase Innovation
Reflecting its ardent belief that open standards will drive future innovation in technology, Sun has established the Open Media Commons initiative. The goal is to develop an open-source, royalty-free solution for the distribution of digital content and the focus is on authenticating people and roles, not just devices. Engaging with device manufacturers, content owners and distributors to work together opens the door for an open standards-based set of Digital Rights Management (DRM) and Certificate Authority (CA) services which could be applied to a wide range of content and situations, including personal rights management, the privacy of health records and compliance management for businesses dealing with Sarbanes-Oxley. With its successful history of building open communities, and with a proven commitment to open source, Sun is the ideal organization to lead this cross-industry effort.
Mobile Content Services Rising as Revenue Source
Mobile Operators are turning to mobile content services as a leading revenue source. Applications such as ringtones, logos and games are now second only to voice services in mature markets. Rich content, such as full-length music, videos and live streams, are enticing subscribers to spend more on downloads. The Sun Java (tm) System Content Delivery Server (CDS) is a leading product to enable these services, providing a complete content management, marketing and delivery solution. This platform offers innovative features such as multi-vending, remote vending, promotions, coupons, bundles and protection with various DRM technologies - including OMA DRM - for all content types and all devices, resulting in a richer purchase experience for end users. The CDS will be showcased at the Sun and Lucent booths, and at the Mobixell showcase.
Sun will be exhibiting at Booth C43 & HS8.07/HS8.08. Members of the press interested in meeting with a Sun executive prior to 3GSM or at the show may contact:
