The V-Mate, launched Saturday at the IFA consumer electronics show in Berlin, enables users to play back recorded movies, video clips and TV programs on mobile devices with memory card slots, such as cellular phones, media players, game consoles and notebook computers.
Sandisk joins other companies targeting the nascent market for portable memory card recorders, including Neuros Technology International LLC, the maker of the MPEG4 Recorder 2.
The V-Mate, which can record up to three and a half hours of video, supports a wide range of memory card formats, including SD (Secure Digital), MicroSDHC (Micro Secure Digital High Capacity), MiniSDHC, MMC (multimedia card), Memory Stick Duo and Memory Stick Pro Duo.
The recorder handles the analog-to-digital conversion, compressing video with MPEG-4 into the correct file format for the requested device. It connects to the analog audio/video input of a TV.
A remote control device allows users to control settings as well as record or access content via on-screen menus.
The V-Mate also includes an infrared emitter, which users can program to automatically turn on the TV tuner and record a selected channel.
The recorder, which measures 5.1 inches x 2.6 inches x 0.8 inch, will be available in October and carry a suggested retail price of US$129.99.
IFA runs through Wednesday.
