Madrid, January 6 2005 - A recent study by the Anti-Phishing Working Group
(APWG) has revealed that in November, the number of phishing attacks increased dramatically, and the malicious code used has become more sophisticated.
The report has revealed that in November 2004 online fraud attacks were 29 percent up on figures for October. The information provided by the Anti-Phishing Working Group also claims that more than 1,518 phishing sites were detected, most of which were aimed at perpetrating online fraud related to banks.
The report also highlights the sophisticated techniques used by the criminals to steal data. Instead of simply using messages that try to trick users to entering their confidential data, they use malicious code that infects the victim´s system and waits for them to access the bank or e-commerce website to either replace the website or log the keystrokes when users identify themselves.
The Anti-Phishing Working Group believes that the advances in phishing malicious code are the result of an increasing interest of organized crime syndicates in identity theft and online crime.
