Madrid, October 5, 2005 - In this issue we are going to start a short series of recommendations on planning the backup copies made in companies. Today we are going to focus on the need to ensure that backup copies of corporate information are housed in a safe place, as the latest catastrophes caused by hurricane Katrina and hurricane Rita, which have unfortunately had serious repercussions on people, have highlighted the fragility of systems in the face of natural disasters.
Backup copies are one of the most basic and essential security measures for safeguarding the information stored on systems.
When defining the backup policy, it is important to pay special attention to the physical location of the duplicate information, as the environment must be protected against all risks, including natural disasters.
Even though data loss is often a result of local system problems, such as viruses, accidentally deleting files, or hardware problems, it is important to take other setbacks into account, which can affect a wider area of our environment.
For these reasons, it is important to store backup copies (on tape, CD or any other format) in a different location from the system, which is well-protected. Many companies have special vaults for storing these copies, which are specially designed to mitigate the effects of fire and floods.
Another model for storing backup copies is to store the data in a remote location, in another building, city or even further. These copies can also be made remotely via private networks and encrypted channels via the Internet or regularly transferred using more traditional means.
Although remote backup copies are mainly used by large companies that require high availability and response to disasters, the low cost of host services and bandwidth make this type of service more accessible to home users.
