Hardware failure affects 120,000 websites

Madrid, December 6 2005 - According to VNU, a hardware failure in Network Solutions name resolution systems has affected 120,000 websites.

The malfunction occurred in the system that handles domain name requests, not in the actual DNS server (*). This problem affected websites that hosted their domains in Network Solutions, which could not be accessed during the time the service was disrupted.

This incident shows the large amount of factors that could affect outsourced services, and which must be taken into account when high availability is needed. Even though Network Solutions has a backup system to ensure service continuity, this was not enough to prevent service disruption.

(*) DNS: system that facilitates communication, location, etc. of computers connected to a network (or the Internet), by assigning names (easier to remember texts strings) to each computer´s IP address.
